Did you know that Australian businesses are now able to register a new shorter domain name for their website?
www.yourbusiness.com.au -> www.yourbusiness.au
(The same applies to net.au, .org.au, .gov.au, or .edu.au)
But, this doesn’t happen automatically. You must register your domain before 20 September otherwise it becomes available to the general public (meaning anyone could legally use your business name in a website ending .au and it will be very difficult to do anything about it after that time).
What do you need to do to secure your domain?
If you already have a domain name ending in com.au, and you registered it before 24 March 2022, the matching .au domain is likely reserved for you, so contact your domain hosting provider – e.g. GoDaddy. Check if there is a temporary hold on your .au domain and secure it asap (usually costs around $10).
After September 20, it will be available to the general public, and anyone who buys it will be able to freely use that website ending in .au as they wish.
What this means
If you own abcbusiness.com.au, you have until 20 September 2022 to register abcbusiness.au as well. You do not have to use both URLs for your website, you can direct one to your existing domain automatically. But it’s worth securing it and I highly recommend you go to your website hosting provider to secure your .au domain (and have them redirect to your existing site).
